The novel is essentially a day in the life of a London neurosurgeon, Henry Perowne. Perowne is apparently a medical superstar who takes great pride in his work and skills. He is happily married to an attorney and has two very successful children (one a poet, the other a musician). While much of Perowne's day is tedious and mundane, it can hardly be deemed to be without drama and suspense. Somehow, the periods of day to day tedium blend well with the interspersed "events" in a way which worked quite well for me.
At its heart, is a family reunion of sorts, as Perowne's twenty-something daughter returns from Paris in conjunction with a visit from Perowne's father-in-law ( a somewhat difficult fellow). This is against a backdrop of well organized and attended demonstrations against the looming 2003 Iraq War which is well presented and argued, both for and against. Perowne's fender bender involving a small time hoodlum with Huntingdon's Disease sets into motion a chain of events which lead up to the climax of the novel.
This is a rather brief book, easily read in 6-8 hours and encompasses 24 hours in the life of the characters. I found it to be both worthwhile and captivating, never losing my attention even during those periods of the day when little of interest is occurring.
