The author effectively unfolds this saga, revealing important elements in small doses. As my reading progressed and I thought I had things figured out, another unexpected factor came into play that caught me off-guard. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome and its deviation from what I had originally anticipated. While the conclusion contained a satisfying fulfillment, it was also laced with regret. There were so many misunderstandings and betrayals that were bred from the rampant distrust in Soviet Russia. While a sense of guilt and remorse pervades, there is also a sense of triumph in the final pages. The author does an amazing job depicting life behind the Iron Curtain, her characters are so authentic, and was completely captivated throughout the entire novel.
