This is a very handy little picture dictionary... an ideal tool to help build your Russian vocabulary. There is no help section to learn the cyrillic alphabet or grammer, that is not what this dictionary is about. Get an English-Russian dictionary if that's what you're after. I would highly recommend the Oxford Russian Dictionary (ISBN 978-0-19-861420-3).
The binding is softcover, but it's a thick glossy, plastic type of finish and very good quality. The overall dimensions of the dictionary is small and compact - about the size of a hardback novel. In the hand it feels weighty. I sort of expected a big book, like one of those large reference dictionaries. However, its size makes sense really... you can easily carry it in your hand luggage. It would be an invaluable tool if you plan to visit Russia. Even if you cannot read the Russian words it would be quite simple to point at a picture, i.e, taxi, train, theater, hotel or even the toilet.
The pictures are a mixture of photographs, computer graphics and very good illustartions, each is labeled in Russian. Learn the Russian names for almost everything. Insects, plants and animals to household items such as the humble steam iron, knife, fork, refrigerator and so forth. There seems to be a picture for almost anything you could think of. Diferent cuts of meat to different types of pulses, trees, bread, apples, potatoes. Learn the Russian names for body parts and internal organs (though not in depth, there is enough detail to make yourself understood to a doctor). If astronomy and space travel is your thing, this is catered for too. There are sections on sport, transport, photgraphy, electronics and much more.
