The book chews on the realities of some painful happenings - like Mercy having to chose her life over a families. She has to face things that are pinch worthy and has to fail (in the sense of being a powerful, but not all powerful, heroine). She can't save everyone and that's really a gruesome but realistic tone. She's got that vibe of a very well thought character fleshed out in heartache and triumph - here expressed without dilution.
We also get to experience other supernaturals that lead us into an arena of wicked speculation. Briggs has most delicately found the spot where unknowns are not frustrating but really rather tantalizing. We learn in her books when we can and cannot answer certain questions, letting our mind as readers run wild but not to the point of feeling excluded. But when answers are needed they are given so the book, I feel, is most satisfying.
I don't belief this is disappointing. It's a quick read and well written. It's another one that I absolutely adore and whole heartedly wish this series continues on with many, many more books taking Mercy and us readers both home to the Tri-Cities area and beyond for more adventures! There's really quite nothing as much of a guilty pleasure as reading these books for me on a weekend, and I have yet to be disappointed.
