The role of the respiratory therapist in health care has changed dramatically over the past several decades. Originally, “inhalation therapists” were primarily employed by hospitals to provide expertise in the equipment needed to care for patients with lung disease. If a patient needed oxygen, the IT would roll an oxygen cylinder into the room, attach a reducing valve, and apply oxygen per the physician’s order. Inhalation therapists were not expected to understand the pathophysiology associated with the variety of lung diseases seen in the hospital. They were not expected to assist the physician in making the diagnosis or apply therapy with a critical eye to identify the effectiveness of the treatment plan.
