This title is part of the publisher’s new research series on American literature, designed to help students and teachers find the right questions to ask about literary topics, works, and authors when doing research. The authors and works included in the series are the ones most likely to be taught, such as Washington Irving’s The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, and Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage. Each book is divided into five parts. Part 1 gives the social and historical background of the period along with the international and native influences on the literature. Part 2 provides 10 study guides on general literary themes. Each study guide includes a general introduction to the topic, topics for discussion and research, resources to consult, and people of interest. Part 3 offers 30 study guides for a particular literary work or author, such as the letters of John and Abigail Adams, Edgar Allan Poe’s poems, and Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. Part 4 is an annotated bibliography of the best research books and articles, while part 5 is a glossary of terms. All of the guides conclude with an index of authors, terms, and titles. The series will be very useful for teachers who are looking for help in planning discussions for their classes and for college students who need help in figuring out how to study a work and developing a theme for a paper. High-school students in advanced literature courses will also find these books useful for their research. Recommended for college libraries as well as public libraries where there is a demand for help with literary research. Also available as e-books. --Merle Jacob
