The story behind both the book and the movie made me weep inside. The story itself is fiction, but Sapphire based the story on real-life experiences she had teaching in Harlem. It could be a true story - and the sheer possibility is enough to make anyone cry. It also highlights how powerful it can be when one person truly cares for another. Precious had a terrible life at home - abused by both parents, neglected by her grandmother, and dismissed by the social worker as a lost cause. It was only because one teacher saw potential in her and pushed her that she was able to climb out of the hell she had been living in and see herself as worthy of more.
