In offering the first English translation of Marie de Gournay's "Preface" to her initial edition of Montaigne's Essais (1595), Colette Quesnel and I aim at redressing for Anglophone readers the same deficiency to which Francois Rigolot was responding when, in 1989, he produced the first French edition of the 1595 Preface since its original appearance. The multiple editions of the Essais over a forty-year period (from 1595 to 1635) following their author's death reflected the tireless promotion and the assiduous editorial labors of Marie de Gournay, Montaigne's "fille d'alliance" [adoptive daughter]. Yet from the time of Marie de Gournay's own death in 1645 (at the age of 79), the celebrated masterpiece of her "father" was virtually severed from her name. Post seventeenth-century editions of the Essais do not include any of the several versions of the Preface.
