From preface:
Since the publication in June, 1964 of the well known NBS Handbook,
the advent of microelectronics has completely changed the needs of working
scientists and engineers. Specifically, the need for numerical tables essen-
tially has vanished while the need of a portable handbook of the analytic
properties of mathematical functions has increased. Though the NBS hand-
book fulfills the needs admirably it is burdened by the sheer bulk of the vo-
lume resulting from, by now, superfluous material. The present volume has
been designed to accommodate this changed working environment. The per-
sonal practical needs of the editors provided the impetus and the guiding
light in the selection of the necessary material. The numbering of formulae
and chapters of the original NBS Handbook has been retained, allowing for
cross reference with the original NBS Handbook. Chapter 2 has been slight-
ly extended and small errors have been corrected as noted in the remainder
of the text. We thank the staff of National Bureau of Standards and in particular
Dr. Burton H. Colvin for their cooperation etc
