During recent years the durability of concrete structures has attracted considerable interest in concrete practice, materials research, and national as well as international standardization. Owing to extensive efforts much progress has been made to understand better the corrosive mechanisms acting on concrete and reinforced concrete structures in service, and frequently, more restrictive regulations have been introduced to aim at an improved durability of structures. These rules are essentially based on long-term experiences rather than on a designed corrosion resistance. Although the basic mechanisms of the most important corrosive actions are well known, no generally accepted methods are available yet to predict the performance of a given concrete on the basis of a materials characteristic in relation to the severity of the corrosive attack that is expected for the prevailing exposure condition.
