ABC++ was designed to support architecture-independent parallel programming in C++. The system consists of a class library, written in standard C++, and a runtime system which provides a uniform shared-data model on uniprocessors, networks of workstations, and massively-parallel computers. ABC++ assumes that a single program will be executed on every processor in the machine, although different objects and/or functions may execute concurrently. ABC++ supports two commonly-used models of concurrency. The first is that of active objects, or actors [Agha 1986], in which C++ objects having their own independent threads of control can be created on any processor in the system.
