From structuring a presentation to closing, there are techniques to improve your effectiveness as a speaker. I a new to speaking in public and even networking, so this book was a great way to identify any bad habits and get rid of them. I am now feeling more confident and prepared when speaking to small and large groups. I would definitely recommend this book! Summary: OWN this book! Rating: 5 There's good and bad news about "Own the Room." Let me get the bad news out of the way first. You know all that stuff you've spent endless time learning about getting through to people and making presentations that get results? You might just have to throw it away. That shouldn't shock you, because why would you be checking out this book if all those other things you've learned worked so well? Now for the good news. "Own the Room" is here to replace all those out dated, mediocre result producing techniques you've learned and do something they never did. It's here to get you the results you are seeking. This book "had me at hello" because it a) makes sense; b) feels right; and is c) eminently and imminently doable. And chuck full of stories and examples that you can literally see makes this book something that is as enjoyable to read as it is helpful to use. One of my greatest lessons from "Own the Room" is about becoming immediately compelling by telling (vs. selling) a story about an obstacle, problem or challenge that your audience will quickly see themselves in and dealing with, offering them a solution that not only works but will impress them as something they wouldn't have thought of and finally sharing the results it produced. That is just one of the many tips you literally can take to the bank from "Own the Room." It is a perfect companion to my new book, "Just Listen" Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone (AMACOM, Sept. 15, 2009). I emphasize in that book how getting through to people is not about pushing yourself on them, but getting where they're coming from, discovering what they most want and urgently need and then giving it to them. "Own the Room" is a field guide for doing just that. It's not about selling, but about compelling people to listen to you and eagerly want to hear (and then buy) more. Therefore... make sure you OWN this book and the best way to do that is BUY it. Mark Goulston, M.D. - author: "Just Listen"Just Listen: Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone - syndicated Tribune career advice columnist - blogger/columnist Fast Company magazine Summary: The book you want to read again and again Rating: 5 As a professional speaker I'm always interested in tips that can help me connect with my audience, inspire and engage the people around me. This book is full of ideas that work. I've worked with the authors and draw on their advice, suggestions and pointers for every talk I give whether its for 2 people or 200. I am happy that there is a Kindle edition so I can take this book with me as I travel and refer to it to help me prepare. The two chapters that draw me into the book are the first, Intention and the sixth, Stage Fright. Two critical issues for me. I highly recommend this book and know that you will find the material useful, the tone friendly and that your presentations will delight you (and your audience) when you build on what you'll learn here.
