The purpose of this book is to bring together into a comprehensive review what is known about the optics of the sea. The reader will find that the physical aspect of the problem and its relationship to oceanography is predominant. Some emphasis is laid on the characteristics of instruments and on their capacity for providing adequate definitions of measured quantities.
Thermodynamics has been considered to lie outside the scope of the book. Furthermore, “Underwater photography and television” have not been dealt with since exceIIent reviews of these chiefly technical subjects have recently been published.
The monograph is presented with the reservation that it is not a complete description of all theories of the optics of the sea and does not cover all research in the field. The author, nevertheless, hopes that it will be useful as a reference book and that it can answer questions which confront the student or the specialist. I am indebted to friends and colleagues all over the world for their support of this work, and in particular to Professor E. Steemann Nielsen and to Drs. Joachim Joseph and John Tyler for stimulating criticism and advice. I also want to express my sincere thanks to the staff of the Institute of Physical Oceanography, Copenhagen, for their unstinting cooperation.
