This is a self-contained story and if there is a reference to previous books, there is sufficient information to keep the reader informed about those books. I would highly recommend starting with book one, but that is not a necessity for the overall enjoyment of each book. One main thing about reading them out of order is the fact that there will be spoilers to the previous books and that is the main reason for recommending starting at book 1. Another reason is there is a bigger plot that forms throughout the series to go along with each episode and it keeps getting better and better. I recommend this to fans of fantasy and if you would like to try reading fantasy, Mr. Sullivan is a great author to start. If you are more into the dark fantasy, I still would recommend this series, but go into it with an open mind as it is not very dark, but a well worthy read.
