Need For Speed: Shift developed by Slightly Mad Studios, perhaps better known as Blimey! Games, co-developers with Simbin GT Legends and GTR 2, marked by Electronic Arts a turn for the franchise's most famous car. This is a real reboot, a concept completely new. Our need for speed is not met in illegal street racing, paying attention to the benevolent eye of the police, but as a classic car title, where the progression is linked to our ability in a number of competitions around the world. The distortion of the gameplay is a risky bet that could alienate many fans historical Need For Speed, but in light of our test is definitely won. Shift collides head-words with various Gran Turismo and Forza, strong also some interesting features that distinguish it from competition.

Levels, medals and stars
The game runs through competitions of various types divided into 4 groups: once you reach a score high enough you unlock access to the world tour, a real Champions League car. The competitions offer is varied: in addition to the races on more than twelve rounds against opponents are appreciated very special events against a single pilot, while remaining within the racing in the standard package of all the titles this kind, there are the races in time, to eliminate those, some focused on the life, cross and delight of every lover of racing games and drift, which are unfortunately the weakest of the lot, being that little bit more but all jars 'inside the game: very fun, difficult to master and frankly forgettable. In fact progress in Shift is divided into two separate and distinct, the level of rider and counting the stars. The first assesses the way we drive, if you prefer a clear or aggressive driving, then counting such as door and slide into the curve rather than holding steady course, and races without incident.

At each level of advancement are cash prizes but also new liveries, finishes, especially rims cars as gifts and invitations to call. The latter vary depending on how you drive, if you have a junkyard run very often in single elimination events, if you are virtuous trajectory we will find ourselves engaged in a race against time. In addition to cash prizes, which are used to buy new cars and the various steps to upgrade the machine, Shift rewards the player with several medals, relating to objectives that refer to how you drive and use machines. There are two types, those minors and master, the latter are obtained as they are won smaller ones, from the bronze medal finishing with the platinum. The stars represent the meters instead of evaluation of each competition. Not enough to just get there first, but depending on the type of event must obtain special race results, which resemble the characteristics of the two styles. Once you reach a certain number of stars, you unlock the following band competitions. We do not know if this is intentional in the design, but unfortunately often is forced to redo a race several times, because maybe the first time the focus was on the podium but if you want to earn the bonus stars may need to throw opponents off the road , send them to focus on spin or drifting in the corners. This introduces a critical, or rather a short-circuit end of the game Electronic Arts. Shift is basically a simulation title, the physics of car credible and eliminating aid forgiven little or nothing, then why include targets that induce the player to drive incorrect throwing opponents off the road and sending them into a spin regardless inviolability of their vehicle and the desire, purely simulation, to be as technical as possible so as to make the best time?

The simulation for all
Dualism in the gameplay but also how to interpret the dualism in question and simulation realism. The refined and detailed mechanical tuning of the cars, but totally complete only with the purchase of body kit is another sign of a certain desire for realism Slightly Mad Studios. At the slightest change of attitude on the car you notice a decided change in the driving model. And 'in fact advised to act on downforce, ride height, gear ratios and so on, as some cars, such as rear-wheel drive are hard to tame horses. The same feeling is felt with automatic upgrade levels of the cars, which operate similarly to those of Gran Turismo, and cover all parts of the machine, such as weight, engine, clutch, nitro, suspensions but also for new interior and tires larger and soft, to be applied strictly in its entirety for non-appearance on the track with a car unbalanced and unresponsive.
Unfortunately for realism, in some cases exacerbated the means four wheels, not always a realistic physical clashes and danni.Il game live on the extreme consequences of Shock tolerates, indeed encourages support for overtaking on bends, but if you put two wheels on the grass or dirt in some cases it becomes impossible to bring the car back on track. There is then a real damage to the car. On the one hand, as explained below, the focus was all about visual impairment of the pilot, with the rear window that breaks with the constant bumps and jolts of the car and turning gray after the impacts of some significance. The big trade of paint on walls and guard rails, in addition to losing a little speed to the car often do not involve destruction consistent with the impact of the medium. After several suicide attempts there was only loss of the bonnet and dented front and back (the sides of the car seem immune to damage), while at the level of mechanical damage, apart from a gradual slip but the car we have ever uncontrollable malus noted. No reduction in speed, acceleration and braking power. It seems to have wanted to try to shift into a kind of realism, focusing only on the model driving the cars, but sought a more arcade, and thus more immediately enjoyable, the conduct of the race. Ultimately though, this strange equilibrium holds: If you curse the developers forced to search the best path, but thank you for the tolerance response in shock and in the door. What is most important however is that experience, the feeling of driving is the highest level, there is never an accomplice to the frustration and technical features of the game, empathy is possibly superior to rivals forthcoming. Then a game with a transversal approach to the two stylistic canons of the genre, a title so that instead of mediating between simulation and arcade takes a little of both some of the other, without diluting the characteristics of both. The pure hard and could not accept, but objectively it all works and most importantly, fun. Speaking of AI, one can not praise the good work done by developers. Up to the level of difficulty rises significantly the wickedness of opponents, which fortunately wrong in a credible, especially when put under pressure and fortunately for us never suffer the notorious train effect, and even battling with each other using the points of overtaking so different every time. A decision whether to applaud one on one races, where you notice a decided boost the capacity of the driver's opponent than when it reported the strongest rider in the group. In these cases the challenge gains adrenaline.

Some numbers and a dash of multiplayer
The simulative nature of Shift is concentrated all in the options menu guide where you can choose the degree of realism applied to the gameplay. The title in fact, just started, it shall play a test ride and try to set these settings automatically depending on how you drove. You can always change the settings by selecting a general level of difficulty (easy, medium, hard or pro) or descend into detail values such as traction control, ABS and the realistic damage. The fleet of Need for Speed: Shift settles on 60 cars purchased through the dealer, plus another dozen plenty of extra devices that are unlocked with increasing level of pilot and can be used in multiplayer challenges. Car manufacturers considered ranging from classic Audi, BMW (M3 GT2 among other things is the car cover of game), Honda, Ford, Nissan cars to get to taste the most exotic and powerful as the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, Lamborghini Murcielago, Maserati MC12 GT1, Mercedes SLR McLaren 722 Edition, but unfortunately no Ferrari. So there is something for all tastes but in terms of sheer numbers the value is a bit 'low for a guide that should point to throne of the simulation.
Among others, these numbers are to be added to a basic problem of the car park Shift: the fact that for each range of cars there are a few decidedly above all others is at least as completely unusable due a model of driving sometimes too extreme by the re-traction and excessive discharge of power. This results in a fairly standardized process: just unlocked the tier of cars, you tend to buy an average vehicle, it improved to around half of its features, then resells it to buy the best car band and proceeds to tuning.Rimanendo anchored to its pure numerical description, Shift offers 37 different paths: some really creative work and other existing developers. For the former we can say that fidelity in the reconstruction is virtually complete, if you except for some minor variations in the provision of curbs or obstacles on the track that Slightly Mad Studios has slightly altered to make driving more fun. As for the tracks is the great fictitious work done to make them completely believable and very enjoyable especially during the long 1 on 1 challenges.
In general, the variety in the environments is really very high: you switch circuits urban mountain paths to reach the Oval typical of Nascar racing. As for the multiplayer Need for Speed: Shift does not shine by variety and content. In addition to the ubiquitous charts with which to compare our times with players around the world or maybe just friends, are basically two ways. A simple versus classified or not, where a race, a time attack or a drifting competition up to eight players using the cars in our garage or a small selection of cars as standard. And an equally simple but more detailed duel between drivers. In this case it is a step competition where we will face three rounds of preparation, the quarter-finals and final. Whenever you face another pilot of our own level driving the same car chosen at random by computer
and a selected path too randomly.

The technology takes to the track
Where Need for Speed Shift runs off fluid and smooth and can not collect any critical point of view and feel. The technical backbone of the game is its unique camera placed on top of the pilot and which helps to provide that sense of realism into view from inside the car. In agreement with the physical fact, the point of view of our swings and jumps registering offline and respecting each application of gravitational forces. All this combined with a skilful use of the effects of blurring and dimming of vision, contribute to a sense of empathy rarely tried in other driving titles. See the speedometer or mirrors that blur as they gain speed, or be affected by a slight side impact or a head-on collision resulting in blindness and jerk is something rather difficult to describe in words. The views from the outside or the hood lose part of this unique simulation, which also owes much to the faithful reconstruction of the manic dash care in many details, but at the same time allow you to admire the graphic detail of a whole shift. In terms of effects this Need for Speed meets the standards we are used canons, especially in terms of driving licenses: HDR with attached lens flare textbook, especially in dense mixed circuits of ups and downs, good particle that jumps out at 'sudden and more extreme during clashes in general graphic detail that comes together in great textures and impeccable quality landscapes. The frame rate is nailed on 30 frames per second on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (there have been occasional dips in frame rates in classical chaotic post-departure) while PC can be reached very easily and over 60 FPS, even on our computer testing where the game was played back at 1920x1200 with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering to 2x and all graphics settings set to high, except for details of routes instead set to medium. More generally, a note of credit must be made to the design of circuits, is excellent in terms of reconstruction in the case of tracks that really exist (Laguna Seca, Silverstone, Nurburgring) and in terms of stylistic variety and quality in the case of circuits fabricated. Rather different discourse regarding the cars.
Here the work done is fairly good but not excellent: the reconstruction is always faithful but purely in terms of graphic detail the cars do not pierce the screen and are so nice but some span less than what we have become accustomed to competition from various Forza Motorsport Gran Turismo. And 'good instead of the various stylistic changes made affordable and offer a good variety onto the track when there are more cars of the same model. It 's always nice to see a certain tailpipe rather than a disc brake caliper colors in a certain way and it all helps to provide that degree of customization including visual inspection. Double-sided for the "coin" sound. On the one hand we have the sound effects absolutely first-rate: the sound of the engines enters the ears, each with its different shades and a brute force that literally seem to be sitting in the car. The hiss of the turbine that starts up with increasing torque, even the whistling of the brake discs when stressed for too much braking. Everything is recreated with great care. Speech is anything but done for the music absolutely understated and pretty standard. We must however say that the musical accompaniment is disabled by default in all competitions, except for those drifting where, somehow, traces hip-hop and Latin flavor, there may also be. We must say a few words for the speech which constantly accompanies the player and is made of a great Italian adds a tasty touch of atmosphere. Conceptually serves as a tutorial at the time of release of different ways and helps give a feeling of continuity to our climb to the world tour NFS.
