This quite suspenseful (and at times) humorous mystery takes place in a lovely Scottish setting and is reminiscent for that reason of M. C. Beaton's Hamish Macbeth series. The plot unravels at a good pace to a satisfactory conclusion. Murder on the Moor is more similar to the debut novel in the Rex Graves series, Christmas is Murder, than the two intermediate ones, in that it is truly cozy and "closed room," that is, someone at Rex's secluded retreat in the Scottish Highlands had to have dunit. The story, as usual, is strictly from Rex's viewpoint, and the reader sees everything he sees and hears everything he hears, which avoids confusion and unnecessary digressions, and keeps the mystery in focus. As per Agatha Christie mysteries, Murder on the Moor is plot-, rather than character-driven, although further facets of Rex's personality are revealed and his relationship with Helen progresses as a side note.
