This mystery, the first in a series set in various neighborhoods in Paris, features a female private investigator and a charming cast of secondary characters. Cara Black is clearly in love with the city of Paris, and brings its sights and smells into the story throughout. A very commendable first novel and introduction to a detective and her world. I've since gone on to read the rest of the series, and found that Black's story arcs and characters have gotten better and better with each book.
Black is also obviously very concerned with the legacy of WWII in Paris, and with the ramifications on Paris's Jewish community (now that I've read all Black's books, I see this theme recurs, although it's never quite as central as in Marais).
