Motown Chartbusters[Vol 1]This series of Motown recordings is in approximate chronological order but only begins in 1966. This means that some notable early UK hits are missing from the series including hits by the Supremes (Where did our love go, Stop in the name of love, You can't hurry love) and the Four tops (It's the same old song, Loving you is sweeter than ever, Reach out I'll be there) as well as tracks by the Temptations, Stevie Wonder and others - and that's not counting all the great Motown songs from the early sixties that were big hits in America but didn't chart in Britain. Some early classics such as Babymore??e?? love, Dancing in the street and My guy, all of which first made the UK charts in 1964, re-entered the UK charts later and are included in the volumes covering their time of re-entry. A few other big hits are also missing, notably a couple of other Four Tops tracks that made the UK top ten (Bernadette, Walk away Renee). So you cannot build a definitive collection of Motown's UK hits by collecting this series, but it is still a fine series (especially at the price) and the omitted tracks are easy to find elsewhere. On this volume, you get plenty of famous songs including three Supremes tracks (You keep me hanging on, The happening, Love is here and now you're gone) and other classics by the Four Tops (Standing in the shadows of love, Seven room of gloom), Stevie Wonder (Blowing in the wind, I was made to love her), Martha Reeves and the Vandellas (I'm ready for love, Jimmy Mack), Jimmy Ruffin (What becomes of the broken hearted, Gonna give her all the love I've got), the Temptations (I know I'm losing you), the Marvelettes (When you're young and in love) and others. A look at the charts shows that many of these classics weren't such big hits in the UK charts as you might expect, but Brits were slow to appreciate Motown. This is a great compilation of some of Motown's classic songs from 1966 and 1967.
1. Blowin' In The Wind -Stevie Wonder
2. You Keep Me Hangin' On - Diana Ross And The Supremes

Motown Chartbusters[vol 2]Although Motown were really strong at this time, there are few big UK hits here. Reflections (Diana Ross and the Supremes) and If I were a carpenter (Four Tops) made the UK top ten, while Gotta see Jane (R Dean Taylor) made the UK top twenty. The remaining tracks here were only minor UK hits although some were huge hits in America.Despite their limited impact on the UK charts at the time, many of these tracks are now regarded as classics and rightly so. Perhaps Brits weren't ready for them at the time or perhaps the quality of music around at the time was such that they didn't get the attentionmore??e?? they deserved. Anyway, the other tracks include the first hit version of I heard it through the grapevine - Gladys Knight's version was recorded at around the same time as Marvin Gaye's but was thought to be the best choice for release as a single. History shows they were wrong but I enjoy both versions. Marvin's two duets with Tammi Terrell (Ain't nothing like the real thing, If I could build my world around you) and the two Stevie Wonder tracks (I'm wondering, Shoo be doo be doo da day) are among the other highlights. Nevertheless, it seems strange that Walk away Renee (Four Tops) is missing. It's not the only big Four Tops hit missing from this series - Reach out I'll be there and Bernadette are also missing - so I guess there was some contractual problem.Despite the surprising lack of big UK hits, this is a great compilation of some of Motown's classic songs from the sixties.
1. Ain't Nothin But The Real Thing (Marvin Gaye And Tammi Terrell)
2. Reflections (Diana Ross And The Supremes)
3. If You Can Want (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles)
4. You Keep Running Away (Four Tops)
5. I Could Never Love Another (AFTER LOVING YOU) (The Temptations)
6. I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Gladys Knight And The Pips)
7. I'm Wondering (Stevie Wonder)
8. I've Passed This Way Before (Jimmy Ruffin)
9. Some Things You Never Get Used To (Diana Ross And The Supremes)
10. Gotta See Jane (R. Dean Taylor)
11. Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day (Stevie Wonder)
12. You're My Everything (The Temptations)
13. Honey Chile (Martha Reeves And The Vandellas)
14. If I Were A Carpenter (Four Tops)
15. I Second That Emotion (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles)
16. If I Could Build My Whole World Around You (Marvin Gaye And Tammi Terrell)
Motown Chartbusters[vol 3]The inclusion of Marvin Gaye's classic "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" on any album certainly helps the cause along. Add Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour," Martha & the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street," and the Miracles' "Tracks of My Tears," and you're on to a winner. Motown Charbusters, Vol. 3 is arguably the most enjoyable of the 12 collections. Not only does the track selection flow and appear to be well chosen, but there at least ten big hits here that have become legendary. The album focuses mainly on the mid-'60s period, bringing together gems such as the Temptations' "Get Ready,"more??e?? Stevie Wonder's "For Once in My Life," and the Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart of Mine." Released at the time when Motown was really building momentum in the U.K. and U.S.A., this is an essential purchase for all the label's fans.
1. I heard it through the grapevine
2. I'm gonna make you love me
3. My cherie amour
4. This old heart of mine (is weak for you)
5. I'll pick a rose for my rose
6. No matter what sign you are
7. I'm in a different world
8. Dancing in the street
9. For once in my life
10. You're all I need to get by
11. Get ready
12. Stop her on sight (SOS)
13. Love child
14. Behind a painted smile
15. I'm a road runner
16. Tracks of my tears
Motown Chartbusters[vol 4]This one followed Volume 3 to the top of the UK Album chart. It was tucked between Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin in October 1970.
The hits were coming thick and fast for Tamla Motown. Wheras Vol 3 was nearly half re-releases, there was only one on here. The Four Tops' anthemic 'I Can't Help Myself', finally got UK justice with a top ten placing. Their version of Jimmy Webb's 'Do What You Gotta Do' made number 11. Motown and Jimmy had a win-win relationship. His first song writing royalty cheque came from a song he wrote on The Supremes' 1965 Christmas album.
The stock split of Diana Ross & The Supremes is catalogued here. In America, their final single together 'Someday We'll Be Together' was their biggest hit, selling 2 million copies. It stalled outside the top ten here. The (Jean Terrell lead) Supremes first single 'Up The Ladder To The Roof' was the only top ten hit here by any of them. Who would remember now that Diana Ross' first single 'Reach Out And Touch' stalled outside of our top 30. It would become a staple of her concerts for many years.
Stevie Wonder was going strong and getting ready to throw off the artistic shackles of the Motown sound, as was Marvin Gaye. 'The Onion Song' was Marvin & Tammi's biggest British hit. Due to Tammi's poor health, Valerie Simpson did the female lead on that one.
Jimmy Ruffin was proving more popular here than in America. He frequently toured here in the clubs of the North, which became the eastern wing of the chittlin' circuit.
The Jackson 5 began their phenominal run of success in 1970. Their first two American No 1s were also big hits in the UK.
The Tempts were finally getting something like decent UK chart placings. Even their collaboration with DR& S 'I Second That Emotion' made our top twenty. Smokey's original only made the top thirty a year or so before.
Junior Walker's move to a more mellow sound 'What Does It Take To Win Your Love' gave him a UK top 20. He was reluctant to record the song at first, but they persuaded him.
This was a good time for Tamla Motown in the UK.
1. I Want You Back (Jackson 5)
2. The Onion Song (Marvin Gaye And Tammi Terrell)
3. I Can't Help Myself (Four Tops)
4. Up The Ladder To The Roof (The Supremes)
5. I Can't Get Next To You (The Temptations)
6. Too Busy Thinking About My Baby (Marvin Gaye)
7. Yester-Me, Yester-You, Yesterday (Stevie Wonder)
8. Someday We'll Be Together (Diana Ross And The Supremes)
9. A B C (Jackson 5)
10. Never Had A Dream Come True (Stevie Wonder)
11. Farewell Is A Lonely Sound (Jimmy Ruffin)

14. Cloud Nine (The Temptations)
15. What Does It Take (Jr Walker & The Allstars)
16. Reach Out And Touch (Diana Ross)
Motown Chartbusters[vol 5]Beginning with Tears of a clown (a UK number one hit for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles), this volume contains plenty of high-charting hits. Other UK top ten hits include War (Edwin Starr), The love you save, I'll be there (both Jackson 5), Ball of confusion (Temptations), It's all in the game, Still water (both Four Tops), It's wonderful, I'll say forever my love (both Jimmy Ruffin), Ain't no mountain high enough (Diana Ross), Stoned love (Supremes) and Abraham Martin and John (Marvin Gaye - in America it was Smokey Robinson and the Miracles who had the hit with this song). Only four tracks here failed to make the UK top ten. Forget me not (Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) only just missed, while Signed sealed delivered (Stevie Wonder) and It's a shame (Detroit Spinners - known just as the Spinners in America) also made the UK top twenty. Heaven help us all (Stevie Wonder) just made the UK top thirty. This is a very strong compilation of some of Motown's classic songs from 1970 and 1971, showing that (at that stage) Motown was still the leading soul-pop label.
1. The Tears Of A Clown (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles)
2. War (Edwin Starr)
3. The Love You Save (Jackson 5)
4. Ball Of Confusion (THAT'S WHAT THE WORLD IS TODAY) (The Temptations)
5. It's All In The Game (Four Tops)
6. Heaven Help Us All (Stevie Wonder)
7. It's Wonderful (TO BE LOVED BY YOU) (Jimmy Ruffin)

13. Forget Me Not (Martha Reeves And The Vandellas)
14. It's A Shame (Detroit Spinners)
15. I'll Be There (Jackson 5)
16. I'll Say Forever My Love (Jimmy Ruffin)
Motown Chartbusters[vol 6]Yet another installment of Motown's backtracking Chartbusters series, Volume 6 is slight in classic material in comparison to its predecessor. Highlights include the Temptations' "Just My Imagination" (later covered by the Rolling Stones), Diana Ross' "I'm Still Waiting," and Stevie Wonder's ultrafunky take on the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out." In the spirit of their work with the Temptations, the Supremes join forces with the Four Tops for a cover of Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High." As with many Motown covers, this does not pay off as well as the original. Even though Stevie'smore??e?? "We Can Work It Out" is enjoyable, it lacks the mournful seriousness of the Beatles' original. Like many in this series, the set is dominated by the familiar names at Motown: the Temptations, Ross, Smokey Robinson, and so forth. Only a few obscure names make it onto Volume 6: the Elgins, the Velvettes, and R. Dean Taylor. The familiarity of artists will make this album more popular with casual music buyers, if not musical archaeologists hoping to hear unearthed treasures from the tape vault.
1. I'm Still Waiting (Diana Ross)
2. I Don't Blame You At All (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles)
3. We Can Work It Out (Stevie Wonder)
4. Never Can Say Goodbye (Jackson 5)
5. These Things Will Keep Me Loving You (The Velvelettes)
6. Indiana Wants Me (R Dean Taylor)
7. River Deep Mountain High (The Supremes & Four Tops)
8. Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) (The Temptations)
9. Nathan Jones (The Supremes)
10. Simple Game (Four Tops)
11. Heaven Must Have Sent You (The Elgins)
12. It's Summer (The Temptations)
13. Remember Me (Diana Ross)
14. Mama's Pearl (Jackson 5)
15. I'm The One You Need (Come Round Here) (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles)
16. Just Seven Numbers (Can Straighten Out My Life) (Four Tops)
Motown Chartbusters[vol 7]This budget album covers the period 1964 - 1972 & shows how much the Motown sound changed over time with almost nothing of the 60s trademark sound on show at all. The earliest song is the great "My Guy" by the much underrated Mary Wells. Written by Smokey Robinson, its got a lovely looping beat, great lyrics & a catchy chorus. Really a perfect pop record though not really in the 60s style Motown became famous for. Also from the 60s is perhaps the least known track on the album "Festival Time"; in truth not a great track, perhaps the weakest on the album but quite rhythmic. We get 2 excellentmore??e?? post Diana Ross Supreme's hits "Automatically Sunshine" and "Floy Joy" both written by Smokey & both fair sized hits, being up tempo 'happy' sounding tracks. In a similar vein is their collaboration with the Four Tops on "Love In Your Heart" Other standout tracks include "Superstar" from the Temptations, which really motors, "Surrender" by you know who and "If You Really Love Me" by Stevie Wonder. Many will enjoy the 'teeny bop' pop of Michael Jackson but for me the best track by a mile is "Walk In The Night" Here we get Jnr. Walker's sax at its most mellow, over a sweet soul sounding girl backing group; catchy song with great swirling strings & sax that has just enough guts when it counts - absolutely fabulous and nothing like any other Motown hit I can think of! Worth buying the album for although there are plenty of Jnr. Walker albums out on CD to choose from. Overall a great album, featuring some great stars, with a very clean sound on all tracks even those from the 60s.
1. Automatically Sunshine (Supremes)
2. Just Walk In My Shoes (Gladys Knight And The Pips)
3. Rockin' Robin (Michael Jackson)
4. Take A Look Around (The Temptations)
5. You Gotta Have Love In Your Heart (Supremes And The Four Tops)
6. If You Really Love Me (Stevie Wonder)
7. Surrender (Diana Ross)
8. Ain't No Sunshine (Michael Jackson)
9. Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are) (The Temptations)
10. Bless you (Martha Reeves And The Vandellas)
11. Floy Joy (Supremes)
12. Walk In The Night (Junior Walker And The All Stars)
13. Doobedoon' doobe Doobedoodn' doobe Doobedoodn' doobe (Diana Ross)
14. Festival Time (San Remo Strings)
15. My Guy (Mary Wells)
16. Got To Be There (Michael Jackson)
Motown Chartbusters[vol 8]Michael Jackson (with or without his brothers) and Gladys Knight and the Pips are well represented here, with seven tracks between them, of which only Ben (Michael Jackson) made the UK top ten although Help me make it through the night (Gladys Knight and the Pips) came close.Actually, there aren't many big UK hits here. Stevie Wonder made the top ten with You are the sunshine of my life, having just missed with Superstition. Diana Ross made the UK top ten with Touch me in the morning. Elsewhere, there are wonderful tracks by the Temptations, Marvin Gaye and Junior Walker, all of which deservedmore??e?? to do better than they actually did (and no doubt that's why they're included). If you are looking for plenty of big hits, you won't find many here. However, if you're looking for great Motown music, there's plenty here
1. Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
2. Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye) (Gladys Knight And The Pips)
3. Law Of The Land (The Temptations)
4. Take Me Girl, I'm Ready (Junior Walker And The All Stars)
5. Skywriter (Jackson 5)
6. Touch Me In The Morning (Diana Ross)
7. The Look Of Love (Gladys Knight And The Pips)
8. Morning Glow (Michael Jackson)
9. Papa Was A Rolling Stone (The Temptations)
10. Let's Get It On (Marvin Gaye)
11. Bad Weather (Supremes)
12. Ben (Michael Jackson)
13. You Are The Sunshine Of My Life (Stevie Wonder)
14. Hallelujah Day (Jackson 5)
15. Way Back Home (Junior Walker And The All Stars)
16. Help Me Make it Through The Night (Gladys Knight And The Pips)
Motown chartbusters[vol 9]Diana Ross is strongly featured on this volume, with three solo tracks, a duet with Marvin Gaye and a Supremes oldie from the sixties that re-entered the UK charts in 1974. Baby love was the only UK number one hit for the Supremes when first released in 1964. It just missed the top ten when re-issued in 1974. Of Diana's solo hits, All of my life made the UK top ten while Last time I saw him (an American country hit for Dottie West at about the same time) and Love me were only minor UK hits. You are everything (with Marvin Gaye) made the UK top five.
Another sixties classic that re-entered the UK charts in 1974 is What becomes of the broken hearted (Jimmy Ruffin). Originally peaking at ten in 1966, it made number four in 1974. Observant fans will notice that this track also appears on volume 1. Brilliant as it is, it would have better to replace it on volume 1 with Reach out I'll be there (Four Tops), which doesn't appear in this series at all.
There's a ghost in this house (R Dean Taylor) made the UK top three in 1974, making it the biggest hit for Motown in the UK that year.
Apart from the tracks already mentioned, the big attraction of this volume is the trio of Stevie Wonder hits - Higher ground (the only 1973 hit here), He's mistra know it all and Living for the city. There are also a couple of wonderful Eddie Kendricks tracks (Keep on trucking, Boogie down) as well as Machine gun (Commodores). The tracks by Marvin Gaye, Syreeta and Smokey Robinson, despite their excellence, were only minor UK hits but still did better than Dancing machine (Jackson 5), which didn't make the UK charts at all.
This is a very strong compilation of some of Motown's classic songs from the seventies, strengthened by a couple of sixties oldies.
1. All Of My Life (Diana Ross)
2. Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder)
3. Dancing Machine (Jackson 5)
4. My Mistake (Was To Love You) (Diana Ross And Marvin Gaye)
5. Spinnin' And Spinnin' (Syreeta)
6. Keep On Trukin' (Eddie Kendricks)
7. There's A Ghost Im My House (R.Dean Taylor)
8. Just My Soul Responding (Smokey Robinson)
9. Last Time I Saw Him (Diana Ross)
10. You Are Everything (Diana Ross And Marvin Gaye)
11. He's Misstra Know It All (Stevie Wonder)
12. Baby Love (Diana Ross And The Supremes)
13. What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted (Various Artists)
14. Living For The City (Stevie Wonder)
15. Love Me (Diana Ross)
16. Boogie Down (Eddie Kendricks)
17. Machine Gun (The Commodores)
