Product Description:
Knit to flatter and fit!
It sounds simple. But if every knitter knew how to do it, the unflattering sweater and the top that doesna€™t fit would be things of the past. Unfortunately, thata€™s not the world we live in, and knitwear designer Sally Melville knows why: too many knitters choose the wrong pattern for their shape and size!
After decades of teaching, designing, and writing about knitting, Sally Melville knows how to customize knitting patterns to fit a wide variety of body types perfectly. With a little planning and subtle alterations, you can make a garment that is just right for you! In Mother-Daughter Knits, Sally shares this knowledge for the first time. Together with her daughter, fellow knitwear designer Caddy Melville Ledbetter, Sally demystifies the process of picking the right pattern and modifying it to your bodya€™s advantage. Whether youa€™re a beginning or experienced knitter, young or mature, an hourglass or a triangle, Sally and Caddy have you covered!
The authors have designed 30 customizable garments for women of all shapes, heights, and ages, including:
a€? a slimming Jackie Kennedya€”style Camelot coat,
a€? a reversible tank top with a scoop neck,
a€? a Jane Austena€”inspired jacket with an empire waist,
a€? a flirty top that enhances feminine curves.
With fascinating insight, practical advice, and patterns for both classic and avant-garde tastes, Mother-Daughter Knits just might be the most useful guide a knitter could havea€“whether shea€™s young or just young at heart.
Summary: more usable patterns than any book ever purchasedRating: 5
This book has very handy tips in the Knit To Flatter opening chapter, and was a nice read. The idea of a mother and daughter sharing ideas to bring this book together was very engaging, drawing me into their knitting world a bit.
Each pattern begins with the designer's explanation of why she designed it, what she learned, why she selected elements of the design...it really makes me think about how I can modify for myself, redesign a favorite item from my closet.
Each pattern ends with a nice interchange between mother and daughter regarding knitting, inspirational for me. If you are a mother wanting to knit for a younger person...it provides a great perspective!
The photos and layout of the hardcover book are beautiful, a joy to turn the pages.
But THE BEST of this book are the REALLY GREAT patterns! I have knit so far the Classic Shirt in Louet linen, Sophisticated Hoodie in Rowan Calmer, A Gray Cardigan in a rose color Panda Silk, and Mini-Dress in Nashua Cilantro. A few more on my list for future. Each garment turned out stunning AND FLATTERING (as per book title)! Although there were minor errors in instructions, which is really surprising since any editor attempting to knit from the instructions should have spotted them, they were things I figured out and worked around.
Summary: Love almost every pattern!Rating: 5
I felt compelled to write a review because I think this book is worth it. I have not started making a pattern yet but it's because I'm having a hard time choosing what to start with. I love the way they explain the need to know you body and what looks good with what. This is a definite must have. Can't wait to start.
Summary: so much more than I expected!Rating: 5
I had seen some of Sally Melville's designs in various knitting magazines, and thought they were quite interesting. The concept mother/daughter at a riper age appealed to me, too. This book more than met my expectations: something special for everyone. The book is wonderfully chatty, and fun to read. It has a lot of information about how to create garments that suit, and how to achieve them. There are a lot of patterns, beautifully photographed, that are appropriate for a wide range of ages and sizes. The designs are all described as starting points. You are encouraged to make these all your own. Two projects already on my needles!
Summary: really deserves 5 starsRating: 3
Ladies, if you are buying Sally Melville's books just for the patterns you are missing the best parts. I love some of her patterns and others are YUCK!, but the most valuable parts of the books are the hints, tips, and "how to" sections. Sally is a TEACHER! The information in the books will help you move from being a pattern follower to a master knitter. In this book she helps you learn to fit your body and your style by making minor adjustments in the knitting patterns, length, color, yarn, etc.
I would give this book 5 stars, except that I want people to read my comments. Personally, I skip the 5 star ratings and check to see what bothers other people about a book. If their concerns don't bother me, then I buy the book. This book has sooooo much more to offer than patterns I would have purchased it even if I hadn't liked even one of the patterns.
Summary: A key acquisition for any needlework libraryRating: 5
Sally Melville and Caddy Melville Ledbetter's MOTHER-DAUGHTER KNITS: 30 DESIGNS TO FLATTER & FIT tells how knitters can tailor unflattering sweaters and tops to different sizes and shapes, showing how to customize knitting patterns to fit a wide variety of body types perfectly. A mother-daughter team share knowledge and show how to both pick the right patterns for a body type and modify a pattern to suit, slim, or highlight. A key acquisition for any needlework library.
