This book explores the experiences of a boy coming of age in America learning to adapt to the foreign cultures around him; Foreign, because he is Muslim and African, and of new economic status.
His mom speaks limited English, and because he is considered the man of the house Midnight takes on an exorbitant amount of responsibility for his mother and later his younger sister Naja.
Although, the first portion of the book starts off slow, Sister Souljah puts a lot of work into character development, which gives the reader a good sense of who Midnight is and what shapes and drives him.
The second half of the book Midnight has already crossed a scary line of street violence-yet also falls in love with a high profile Japanese artist.
Once you-the reader becomes invested in the story of Midnight and the people around him the book abruptly ends with far too many unanswered questions.
In conclusion, I would say Midnight by Sister Souljah is a good story with a slow start but unfinished ending. Still a good read if you are into urban type novels.
