For nonlinguists and nonepigraphers, determining proper orthography and adhering to it can be a nightmare, particularly in dealing with the long time spans and the many languages, Mayan and non-Mayan, covered here. In general, I attempt to follow the orthographic conventions for Mayan words that have been accepted by the Academia de Lenguas Mayas in Guatemala, because I am most familiar with them. The use of Spanish diacritical marks on place names or cultural phases drawn from Maya or other indigenous languages often differs between Mexico and Guatemala, however, and in some cases Maya names themselves have changed recently (e.g., the site formerly known as Abaj Takalik is now Tak’alik Ab’aj). This makes it difficult to provide a concise explanation of my decisions, but in the end I havestriven for internal consistency.
