Material and energy balancing belongs to very frequent chemical engineering activities. In spite of this fact, a systematic treatment of this topic in the form of a monograph is quite rare. Balancing also usually forms one or more introductory chapters in general chemical engineering textbooks, but the limited space available there usually makes not possible to cover this subject in depth. The classical treatment of balances in the literature available (which was excellent at the time of publishing) needs to be complemented nowadays for several reasons. Balancing belonged to the first successful use of computers in chemical engineering in early sixties. Since then the spread of computers (and especially personal computers) influenced balancing significantly. The classical steady state balancing in the stage of process design now represents only a part of balancing problems we can meet in practice.
