This monograph is one of a series devoted to topics in theoretical high energy physics, originating from courses given at the Schools in this subject being supported on a continuing basis by the Science and Engineering Research Council of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. These Schools are being held approximately once a year since 1985. They are carefully planned and conducted by the high energy physics community in India as a collaborative effort. Considerable time and care are devoted to the choice of courses and preparation of material to be presented at each School.
The audience at which these Schools are aimed consists basically of graduate students in high energy physics working towards the doctoral degree in various institutions in the country. In addition, sonle students in allied fields like nuclear physics, relativity, astrophysics and cosmology as well as some more senior and experienced research workers with interest in specific topics, are also included. The courses given at each School have both a strong pedagogical component, conveyed through lnajor long courses; and a topical component covering recent and exciting advances through shorter courses. Attention is given to development of basic theoretical techniques, related useful mathematical material, and phenomenology.
