Prefence:
Since the pioneering work of Huffman [H2)* and Moore [M3) in 1954, a considerable mathematical literature has arisen about the behavior of data processors from the point of view of terminal characteristics, that is, input sequences versus output sequences. This book is intended as an introduction to selected topics from this literature, in particular, those with which I am most familiar.
Attention is focused on three types of "machines." These are the sequential machines of Huffman-Moore-Mealy, the abstract machines of the author, and the tape-recognition devices popularized by Rabin and Scott. Turing machines have been omitted deliberately. To include them would (i) detract from a presentation of material whose source is a situation in data processing and (ii) result in the addition of a large amount of extra text. The interested reader will find a most lucid treatment of Turing machines in Davis [Dl)....
