This monograph presents a theory of interplanetary dynamics based upon coronal expansion as the source of interplanetary gas motions. Over the past thirty years, and particularly in the last decade, there has developed a great proliferation of special ideas and views for each of the many observed phenomena attributed to interplanetary processes. Observations of geomagnetic activity, of aurorae, of cosmic ray variations, of solar particle production, of ionospheric heating, of comet tail behavior, etc. collectively imply the continuing active state of the gases and fields in interplanetary space. Many ideas have made their contribution to the evolution of our present thinking on the general subject of interplanetary processes, but except for the central idea that interplanetary activity is brought about by solar corpuscular radiation, there has been to this day no conspicuous tendency for convergence on any particular unified set of ideas. It is felt, therefore, that with the imminent prospect of systematic observation of plasmas, particles, and fields in space the time has come to organize into one printed volume a comprehensive self-consistent dynamical picture of interplanetary activity. The picture will then serve at least as a point of departure for future discussion, argument, and theoretical investigation, as well as furnishing a context for discussing the implications of observation.
