Having read all of John Steinbeck's books, I was prepared to really like this book. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the plot. There was no depth of character to anyone in the book and it left me confused by the praise it received. The idea that the articles found under the cypress would change history doesn't convince me. Why would the Chinese tongs try to cover up such a find? We never find out. Why do we go from one generation to another of people who search for the articles? We never find out. And in the end, the last searchers are left with nothing to show for their hard work. I did find the writing to be good but everything else left me feeling cheated by the author's inability to engage me with a real plot.
