"Imager" is the first book of a new series by L. E. Modesitt. It is by far the best he has ever written. The plot is very good and his writing style has matured. This book leaves you wanting the sequel to come out right away.
Rhennthyl, a journeyman artist, finds that he is an Imager. For an Imager, wanting something to occur, can cause it to occur - even if you didn't "really" want it to happen and with horrible results. Dreaming can be deadly.
Rhenn finds himself manipulated into joining the Collegium of Imagers who teach him to control his talents and protect him and society while he is doing so. Rhenn turns out to be a very talented Imager and in short order several someones try to murder him, he finds love, and he is promoted within the ranks of the Collegium.
