HORIZONS offers students of English in their last year of school or first year at university the chance to develop their skills in reading and writing while working with topical, illustrated material specially related to the Middle East. The book has ten units, each of which contains two passages of literature or journalism, followed by exercises in comprehension, vocabulary development precis , and composition.
The book is also intended to quote the Introduction, “to make its readers think, and think for themselves.” The topics, which include family life, the future of technology, the role of women, and the Muslim past, are each introduced in two contrasting passages, designed to encourage students to formulate and express their own points of view.
The passages and exercises gradually increase in difficulty as the book progresses. A glossary of the more technical words is provided.
