Wambaugh has written another page turner. Like most of his fiction, this book is more character study than crime procedural. I could be wrong but this may be his first "sequel" of sorts, returning to some of the same characters appearing in his earlier "Hollywood Station" and then appearing again in the third Hollywood book, "Hollywood Moon." The novel is standard Wambaugh, readable but memorable only for its endearing laundry list of oddball characters. Surfer cops, Flotsam and Jetsam seem to be Waumbaugh's Greek Chorus, appearing in all three Hollywood books. I listened to the audiobook version on on a long car trip. Even at this late stage in his career, Waumbaugh was able to make me laugh out loud so many times, I actually looked forward to each leg of my long ride. There are more than a few leaden setups to jokes that don't really work (the motor cop character "FX" being the worst offender) but all in all, decades after his LAPD service, Wambaugh has managed to keep it real and believable.
