Like most of pop's smartest ladies, Holly Valance has been bitten by the 1980s bug. However, for State of Mind, the Neighbours-star-turned-pop-pinup hasn't just borrowed the odd fashion tip from the era of pink stilettos and leg warmers; she's time-warped straight back to 1983. Following the lead of single "Hypnotic", her second album is awash with the tinniest of drum-machine beats, funky rock guitars, daft vocal effects and every two-dimensional robotic squelch a roomful of synthesizers can manage. With equally over-the-top choruses, "Everything I Hate", "Roll Over" and the title track make great pop songs out of her electro-funk obsession. Elsewhere though, the tunes struggle to compete with the style overload, and for "Over 'n'Out", "Desire" and "Somebody Out There", her sexy gloss and overblown backing tracks start to sound like decidedly naff gimmicks. She's definitely trying a little too hard.
