High performance polymers can be broadly defined as materials that exhibitproperties superior to those of state-of-the-art materials. However, many scientist and engineers refer to high performance polymers as materials that exhibit not only a unique combination of properties superior to those of state-of-the-art materials but also significantly better elevated temperature behavior. Thus high performance polymers are generally considered to be materials containing high aromatic content and/or heteorcyclic units with relatively rigid segments that impart high glass temperatures, good thermooxidative stability, and high mechanical properties. Representative wellknown families of high performance polymers are poly(arylene ether)s, polyimides, polybenzimidazoles and rigid rod or extended chain heterocyclic polymers.
