Kai loves winter. The frigid temperatures, snow, ice and quiet give him a sense of peace. Unfortunately, it looks like his special time among the elements of nature might be coming to a close because he's positive his betrothed, Gerda, would never permit him even an inkling of anything he'd consider pleasurable. She's a nasty little harridan, beautiful but emotionally cold and conniving, and as far as Kai's concerned in dire need of a spanking - something he also realizes she wouldn't welcome because Gerda doesn't possess a submissive side.
It's on an evening when he's escorting Gerda to a much dreaded elaborate dinner at her parents' home that he first notices a woman he hasn't seen before. The woman has approached the shop where Kai works even though it is clearly closed for the day. Since he's in no hurry to attend the dinner and the woman obviously requires assistance he opts to see if he can help her. Kai's surprised by the woman's knowledge of him and his love for winter, not to mention his distaste for his betrothed. She insists that she is his salvation and there's no reason for him to sacrifice himself to save his family. Her name is Wyn but other than that Kai knows very little about her except that her impertinence is deserving of a spanking.
Kai's unhappiness is practically eating him alive and he wants nothing more than to escape Gerda's grasp and seek solace in the frozen woods but try as he might he can't come up with any way out of his predicament. Much to his surprise an answer is practically handed to him by his mystery woman, Wyn. Not only does she possess the submissive traits he desires in a partner but she seems to thrive in cold weather much the same way he does. She asks him to come away with her but Kai's much too loyal to his family and understands the consequences if he should disappear.
Wyn isn't an ordinary woman - she's the Snow Queen. She's powerful and yet Kai's commanding tone and domineering commands make her want to melt. She knows that loving Kai is futile. One touch of her skin means certain death, but certainly it would be alright to bring him to her ice palace for companionship for one season - if he's agreeable. Can the Snow Queen and a simple shop boy find a happily-ever-after or will one season of togetherness be all they'll ever have?
Who would have believed that a person could have sympathy for Wyn, the Snow Queen? After all it's her duty to bring cold which results in discomfort and difficulties, yet Brynn Paulin depicts Wyn in a completely different light - as a woman just wanting to be loved - and unable to be touched on bare skin. There's a sense of sadness to Wyn and Kai's situation which possesses a glimmer of hope but only if they're willing to take a huge leap of faith and trust that their love for each other will last for eternity. HEART OF ICE is an intriguing storyline with plenty of creative sexual play (because you'd have to be awfully creative if you can't touch skin on skin) and a beautiful twist on the Snow Queen whom I'd never viewed as beautiful or lonely before.
