What I like most about this book (and the first book in the series) is how it evokes the world-view and mindset of the Aztec Empire (or Mexica Empire) without being too obvious about it. The main character, Acatl, high priest of the Dead, talks much like a contemporary person. Yet at the same time, he and those around him wear Aztec headdresses, perform blood sacrifices, and worship the various gods and goddesses. The dichotomy makes sense in the context of the story, and for me it made it all the more interesting.
Highly recommended.
