Rajaa al-Sanea's debut novel is a total page-turner. Breezy and full of interesting day-to-day cultural references, the book is fast paced. We follow four young women through their early and mid twenties as they negotiate love and heartbreak in the context of Saudi social mores. Al-Sanea's snapshot of upper class, affluent and more than slightly self-absorbed Saudi life is deliciously entertaining. Of course, I'm taking it with a huge pinch of salt - this is not meant to be The Grapes of Wrath - and that's part of its charm. The book is also well-edited, no character is allowed to wallow too long in their circumstances. Whoever did the behind-the-scenes editing also deserves much credit for making the characters totally accessible to readers from around the world. Good job - behind-the-scenes writing-people, you know who you are.
Kate Reading is strictly average - her Arabic accent is strikingly skimpy. The four women are indistinguishable from each other. Nevetheless, the narration is entirely unobjectionable.
