The title of this book is misleading as this isn't about the book of Genesis but rather a mix of subjects examined by Spiritism in order to show how certain passages in the Bible should be approached (in light of information given by spirits via mediums in the 19th century). It's helpful to read this book after familiarizing oneself with geology, the Spiritist philosophy (reincarnation, life on other planets, healing, fluids), and the Bible but it's not necessary.
I've always been fascinated with the Bible but traditional and alternative explanations haven't sit quite right with me. So as someone interested in the Bible and reincarnation, this book was invaluable. I thought that the explanations of creation, the story of Adam and Eve, and Jesus's miracles were both challenging and enlightening. The part on geology was too long and I used Wikipedia after awhile instead and because I had reservations that a treatise written in the 1860s was still relevant. I also glossed over the parts on on healing and fluids as I have a hard time believing them - especially in the light of modern medicine - but I found myself going back to them when Jesus's miracles were explained. Like Mulder in the X-Files, "I want to believe" when it comes to healing and fluids.
Even though I thought that the subject matter with regards to the Bible was refreshing and eye-opening, I didn't give this book 5 stars because as a 21st century reader I thought it was an awkward book.
