Although GarageBand has always been easy to use, it provides an amazing amount of power and sophistication to users who really want to dig in and get the most out of the program. GarageBand '08 Power! provides an easy to understand, detailed guide on how to make professional sounding music, podcasts, soundtracks, mixes, mashups, and much more with the newest version of GarageBand. Through the use of screenshots, tutorials, creative jumping-off points, and real world examples, the book teaches the reader how to use GarageBand to create music, record and publish podcasts and score their own movies. It's an ideal introduction for those with no prior knowledge of GarageBand, but also covers advanced topics and provides info an all the new features. Summary: I'm In! Rating: 5 My dilemma was that I had already purchased ILife 08 and already ILife 09 was on the shelves. I had ventured into Garage Band and loved every minute of it plus I had purchased the Jam Packs which came with Logic Studio and were easily integrated into the Garage Band library. The fact remained that even though I had been able to throw some loops into the mix, a live instrument (flute, keyboard, bass) and create some songs, and send them to Itunes where later I burned them to CD so I could listen to my achievements in an awesome car stereo (it is called Ego Tripping and affects all the WannaBees of which I am first in line!) I was realistically only using no more and probably less than 20% of Garage Band 08 powers. So instead of buying the new ILife 09 I asked myself the first smart question of the year: Why should I purchase Ilife 09 and try to catch up with Apple's new releases If I have already Garage Band 08 in my Imac and have not even used and experienced it at its full potential? Enter GarageBand '08 Power!: The Comprehensive Recording and Podcasting Guide. Took a lot of comparing what was out there, specifically how it pertained to my particular version of Garage Band, and for some reason I opted to take my chances with this one even though reviewers-wise had only one review posted. A very decent review but certainly not enough, considering that everyone knows someone that might be able to help by writing a good review. Yes, all it take is a cousin, an uncle, etc and suddenly the work in question gets a 5+. This book is better than my wildest dreams could have anticipated, spoke to me in a clear and thorough way. Right from the start I realized how lucky to have found a book that left almost nothing to chance. Why was I so excited? Because I am dense! I don't know if its the long years of mental and physical abuse by my own hands or the fact that I placed academics way low in my list of priorities. If the lingo turns too technical I loose it, if the wording or the layout etc etc appears too confusing to my dull eyes, I just bought myself a book I can not squeeze knowledge from. Perhaps there is a little exaggeration in my ranting but this book is a beauty in its simplicity of complex aspects. Just to learn all the aspects, each and every morsel of information feels to me like I am being taken by the hand to Sunday School by a kind and highly experienced teacher. So forgive me if I sound ecstatic but that is exactly how I'm feeling and enjoying myself right now with the learning process! Could not be happier with this training book. I am sure his same series book that applies to Garage Band 09 is as equally good. I appreciate so much this book that I have to find out if he has one on Logic Studio, because if anyone like me thinks that Garage Band is a little difficult to learn at full potential, I already know Logic Studio is like Garage Band's Papa! But that is in the future. My logic was that by learning thoroughly (from a-z, sort of speak) all about Garage Band then the evolution into the incredible world of Logic Studio seem certainly more attainable to a wannabee like me! 5 Stars and forgive me If I wrote a book myself! Summary: This book has it all!!! Rating: 5 This is an incredible book for anyone diving into Garageband to produce their own music and podcasts. The author makes it super easy to understand how to get into all the features that Garageband offers. There are excellent examples and tips that will advance the knowledge of even the most experienced of Garageband users. I particularly recommend Chapter 10 on Podcasting for anyone who wants to create professional podcasts with the greatest of ease. I had no idea Garageband could be so simple to use for podcasting, but the results speak for themselves and author, Todd Howard, does a killer job of teaching the process. Chapter 11 is also great about mixing tracks and taking advantage of all the cool automation features you can use to get the best results from your recording sessions. Todd also demystifies the extensive library of Garageband effects and how to adjust parameters to get just the kind of unique sound you are looking for. Garageband '08 Power! really does have it all from step-by-step procedures to serving as an instant reference guided to everything you want to know about Garageband. This book is highly recommended to all Garageband users who want to produce professional results. And from an educational perspective, it also serves as a comprehensive tool for the novice musician to learn the basics about how to digitally record their own music with a Mac!
