The course focuses on the creation, manipulation, transmission, and reception of information by electronic means. Elementary signal theory; time- and frequency-domain analysis; Sampling Theorem. Digital information theory; digital transmission of analog signals; error-correcting codes. Laboratory demonstrating the principles of information management by electronic means.
Prerequisites: Math 101, 102.

o Signal theory: time-domain concepts of amplitude, delay, superposition
o Representation of signals by electronic quantities (electric, optical)
o Elementary circuit theory
+ Circuit laws; series and parallel configurations
+ Equivalent circuits
o Basic analog circuit building block: the op-amp
o Frequency Domain
+ Fourier series; signal decomposition; notion of bandwidth
+ Sampling theorem
* Digital
o A/D conversion; amplitude quantization; data rate
o Discrete-time signals and systems
Information Transmission
* Analog (AM) communication
o Modulation and demodulation
o Noise (SNR, WGN)
o Linear filters for noise reduction
* Digital communication
o Entropy and Shannon's Coding Theorem
o Lossless and lossy compression; redundancy
o Channel coding; error correcting codes; transmission rate
o Capacity; Shannon's Noisy Channel Coding Theorem
Fundamentals of Communication System Design
This is the first course in a two course sequence, the second being ELEC 242.
