Nikki Latrelle is a very likeable character right from the start. She could step out of one of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series as a more serious Stephanie but with a personality that draws you towards her in the same manner. I love horseracing which is why I picked up the book. I'm still a novice in the sport so learning more about the world of the backside was very appealing. But you don't need to really know anything about racing to enjoy this book which has an Agatha Christie feel to it. In fact, Ms. Sasscer Hill was just nominated for the Agatha award for best first novel. This novel definitely warrants her nomination. But getting back to the book, it is a very easy read, you can read it in one day - I read it in one sitting I enjoyed it so much. The characters feel real and represent every walk of life including a crooked and nasty trainer, a mean and menacing jockey who will do anything to keep Nikki from following her dreams of being a jockey, a kooky but loveable friend who works at the track, rich eccentric owners, a glamour-puss girlfriend of one of the owners who befriends Nikki, a mysterious stranger who lurks around the track keeping Nikki ill at ease, a down on his luck old groom who seems to have 'the shine' and a 'Hellish' horse she rescues from the kill pen plus several other characters whose personalities keep the pace of the book going strong. Nikki's experiences go from good to worse starting with the killing of one of the barn's best horses and follows with a murder which Nikki is framed for. Already living on a tight budget, she is banned from being anywhere near the racetrack and must find a way to keep things afloat while trying to clear her name. She enters into a very dark world on the otherside of racing full of unsavory characters with very questionable practices. But there are also several humorous moments in the book as well. Through it all Nikki remains determined and undeterred and you grow to like her even more. As the story unfolds you find yourself more and more drawn into the drama that unfolds in her life and get to the point where you can't put the book down. I really recommend this book and look foward to future novels by Ms. Sasscer Hill.
