In the last few years more and more attention has been paid to hydrodynamical studies of non-traditional liquid flows (polymer solutions and melts). This results from the rapid developments in polymer processing and the use of polymeric materials in various applications. The experimental and theoretical investigations of the hydrodynamics of polymeric liquids showed that only in weak flows (with very low rates of strain) do such systems behave as the usual Newtonian viscous liquids. However, under large and strong (rapid) straining some unusual phenomena emerge, which are, as a rule, of most interest and importance in applications. Among them are such remarkable phenomena as shear thinning (when an effective viscosity of a concentrated polymeric system decreases by 3 or 4 orders of magnitude with an increase of shear rate) and the Toms effect (when a small amount of polymeric additive yields a sharp drag reduction in turbulent flows).
A number of free jet and film flows of liquid polymeric systems represent themselves as strong flows (with rapid deformations). Such flows are used frequently as a central element in polymer processing or in hydrodynamical (rheological) experiments.
