One influential view of the progress of science is that it proceeds by gradual evolution, punctuated by abrupt paradigm shifts and periods of rapid development. It is my contention that we are living through another such period in optics and photonics, in connection with the related topics of photonic band gap technology, and photonic crystal fibres. The former field started with groundbreaking research by Eli Yablonovitch and Sajeev John, and promises fair to deliver us compact, ultra-fast devices with unparalleled power to manipulate photons for a whole range of applications. The latter field had its origin in the work of Philip Russell and his group at the University of Bath, and has opened up new vistas for optical fibres in communication, sensing, generation of light, etc. Both fields have progressed amazingly rapidly, through a combination of improvements in fabrication technology, sophisticated computational modeling and radical thinking "outside the square".
