In this book the author introduces the formulation of problems in fluids mechanics and dynamics, and shows how they can be analysed and resolved using finite element methods. The approach is mathematically rigorous, and it has been assumed that readers are familiar with the techniques of numerical analysis. The book opens with a discussion of the equations of fluid mechanics. This is followed by a detailed investigation of the problems to which these equations can be applied, and an explanation of how they can be analysed and solved.
Using this book, readers will learn how to write their own programs to simulate problems in fluids numerically on a computer. To help with this, important error estimates are given and an appendix is included which gives the listing for a finite element program which can be run using an Apple Macintosh computer.
Students and researchers with a background in numerical analysis or finite element methods will find 'Finite Element Methods for Fluids' extremely useful when they apply this knowledge to the problems of fluid mechanics.
