The humor in Fated is as dry as a week-old chicken bone, but I think it's one of the best paranormal comedies I've read in a long while. It is in equal parts a philosophical query, a romance, a satire, and and a fable. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Fated has a strong social theme running through it, since Mr. Browne's zombie novel, Breathers: A Zombie's Lament, was almost like a civil rights manifesto for the undead. Fated looks at how we try to buy happiness, whether in a pill, bottle, or designer handbag, and the idea that just one person at the right moment can balance the scales for someone who is on a downward spiral.
So yes, the underlying morals are sincere, but that doesn't mean that Fated takes itself too seriously. Mr. Browne pokes fun at anything and everything along the way. I don't want to give away all the jokes, so I'll have to leave it at that. Another tender topic is the ending, which I don't want to spoil in any way. I'll just say that as I neared the conclusion, I kept wondering how Mr. Browne would manage to tie it up in a way that remained true and make me happy (yeah, I don't ask for a lot). Well, I think he managed to do both.
