The map within is reminiscent of the Mediterranean Sea region, in more ways than simply shape. Even the locations of some of the peoples mirror the Mediterranean region today, with the "Alhazii" (Arab) region to the east, or the evil empire (Greece or Rome) to the north.
Buchanan's writing has its rough spots and cliches, and he does some things in his writing that writers are really not supposed to do. Too many adverbs and too many spots where he substitutes other creative words in place of "said." However, he has obvious talent, and judging by the quality of the first book in the series, I am going to keep an eye out for the next one.
