Dorling Kindersley has translated its Eyewitness series, Encyclopedia of Nature, into CD-ROM format, taking advantage of the medium's interactive features. We used the Windows version; a Mac version is now also available. The main screen is a naturalist's office, with drawers, maps, and gadgets to be clicked on to reach a topic. All major animal and plant groups are covered, each with definitions, anatomy, and a few key attributes and representative families. Prehistoric and microscopic life is also included. Major habitats are briefly covered, showing typical natural features and animals, although no maps of their distribution are available. A section on climate discusses weather, oceans, and other natural phenomena. Two "books," "The Web of Life" and "The Green Book," deal with ecology. They discuss global warming, endangered species, pollution, and food webs. A feature called Quizmaster enables one or two players to answer questions based on the CD-ROM; it should be noted that the system crashed when the reviewer tried it.
