Studied at the Cologne Conservatoire and Franz Isidor Zayssa Wullner, then with Theodore Leshetitsky and Emil von Sauer. In 1907 met and, in 1911. She married the violinist Willem von Hoogstratena (marriage broke up in 1927), many concerts in a duet with him. In 1920-ies. lived and performed mainly in the United States while strengthening worldwide reputation as an outstanding performer of works by Beethoven and Brahms. In 1930 returned to Europe. In 1931 at the initiative of Ney in Bonn was established by the annual festival of folk Beethoven days (German Volkstumliche Beethoventage), conducted prior to 1944 and became the forerunner of the modern Beethoven Festival.
Ney Alley supported the establishment of a fascist regime in Germany, in 1937, joined the Nazi Party, she taught at various music schools, including in particular the Conservatory, created by the Germans in occupied Cracow. It is well known letter to Ney Joseph Goebbels to the question whether already cleared the Netherlands from the Jews: if so, Ney was ready to agree to a tour in this country. At the end of World War II for seven years Ellie Ney was forbidden to speak. After the rehabilitation in 1952, she returned to active concert activity that lasted until the last years of her life.
