Looking through the forewords of recent books similar to the one presented here, one finds that most of them state that the book is a somewhat expanded and modernized version of a course given by the author at some university in a certain year. However much we should like to do so, it is not possible to claim that this book is an exception to the rule, since it is really based on a course on phenomenological elementary particle physics given in the academic year 1961-1962 at the department of theoretical physics at the University of Lund, Sweden. The main purpose of the course and, therefore, also of this book is to provide the general background necessary for students who want to specialize in the field of
elementary particle physics. For this reason, we want to present the basic methods and techniques in rather extensive detail. Several standard examples are worked out to a stage where a rough comparison with experimental data becomes possible. However, no attempt is made to include every small correction in a given process or to describe all possible effects that are of importance in the interpretation of a specific experiment. In particular, electromagnetic radiative corrections are only briefly mentioned but never discussed in detail. Further, we are mainly addressing students with a theoretical background and an interest in theoretical physics.
Consequently, no discussion of experimental details is given, but the theoretical discussion is carried out in as close a contact with the experimental material as possible. The author hopes that experimental physicists with an interest in general theoretical ideas will also, on occasion, find at least parts of this book useful.
