Volume 19 in the EPR Specialist Periodical Report series again aims to reflect major research advances in relevant understanding and applications of the technique during 2002 and 2003. The authors have again been given two major challenges: to produce authoritative and critical reviews, which emphasise particularly important developments; and in a style which provides readily accessible accounts suitable not only for existing practitioners but also those wanting to become more acquainted with the scope and applicability of the technique. Overall the intention is to reflect the rapid advances being made in EPR, especially in application of new experimental approaches and analysis. The choice of chapters reflects to a large extent the increasing importance of EPR spectroscopic applications in interdisciplinary research, particularly those related to a more detailed understanding of biological systems. These include further critical updates of the role of paramagnetic systems in the areas of metalloproteins, photosynthesis, DNA and related biomolecular damage, as well as biomedical aspects of free-radicals: this section is complemented in this volume by the review of new EPR approaches now being used to measure inter-spin distances, for example in doubly-labelled proteins.
