Without a doubt, imagining our modem world without electricity would be difficult. More difficult would be for waterlwastewater operators to imagine their treatment facility without electricity. Electricity pervades our lives at every turn and its applications are myriad. It has made possible an almost infmi e variety of tools, machinery and other equipment, most of which we take for granted-from the simple flashlight to incredibly complex computerized systems that operate many of our plants. We have made ourselves almost completely dependent on it. This text is not primarily concerned with applications, but with the basic principles of electricity underlying all the applications. It will assist you in gaining an understanding of the laws governing voltage, current, resistance, and power, as well as the somewhat more complex concepts of alternating current-the principles that are the basis for electronics. The goal of this text is not to make electricians of anyone but to provide basic electrical information for maintenance operators in both water and wastewater treatment and thus give them a better understanding of the complicated equipment found in plants. A knowledge of the simple equations of basic mathematics is necessary for the study of electricity and electronics. However, to make your journey through this text less complicated we present many example problems in simple step-by-step format. Explanations and solutions are sufficiently detailed that the text can stand alone, making it useful for self-study and reference. To assure correlation to modem practice and design, we present illustrative problems in terms of commonly used voltages and current ratings, and cover circuits and equipment typical of those found in today's electrical systems.
