I can't pinpoint what makes this story work, but the writing is neat and concise. Even when the action wasn't going on, I felt myself very engaged in what was going on. I have to give Blackthorne (a pseudonym) credit. He is a fine writer. I would also give credit to Angry Robot. This is the third Angry Robot book that I have read recently and I love their style. The books themselves are great, but the cover art, etc is really fun and makes you want to buy the book. Although, in the case of Edge, I'm not sure they hit the mark from a marketing standpoint. If you read the back cover, you pretty much expect a knife fight every other page. That is not the case. If you're looking for a slasher book, filled with gore you will be disappointed. I'm not sure if there is a knife fight subgenre out there, if there is go there. The only book I can think of with some good knife fights is Dune. Edge handles it pretty much the same way as Dune. The story and characters are great and nicely developed, the plot is good and there just happens to be some knife fighting. There is a lot going on, includeing an American Civil War that is in the periphery of the story, but is one of many gritty details that really sold me on the story. It took me a little while to peel back the layers of the book and discover I was reading a cyberpunk story. That was great for me, I love cyberpunk. We have all of the aspects of classic cyberpunk, high tech lowlifes, hacking, corrupt governments and corporations, street samurai's, streetscapes with garbage strewn everywhere and the ever present Big Brother cameras.
