Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968), by Philip K. Dick is a science fiction novel about the existential crisis of police bounty hunter Rick Deckard, who hunts androids in post-nuclear war San Francisco. Along with The Man in the High Castle, this novel, written in 1966, is his most famous work, a definitive exploration of the ethical dimensions of the android concept, as a literary device for understanding persecution based upon narrow distinctions, such as ethnicity.
Screenwriters Hampton Fancher and David Webb Peoples loosely adapted the novel to the film Blade Runner (1982), directed by Ridley Scott, featuring Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer. For that reason some post-1982 editions of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? have been published as Blade Runner. Moreover, the computer game Blade Runner occurs in the same cinema universe, yet incorporates many novelistic elements.
